SAGINAW, MI (AP) -

A local family center wants to make sure kids are safe around water. The YMCA of Saginaw is offering scholarships to kids in under served parts of the city.

“Educating children about how to be safe around water is just as important as teaching them to look both ways before they cross the street,” said Tina Swanton, Aquatics and Lead Program Director.

The Saginaw YMCA has been providing swimming lessons and water safety for 150 years as a way to prevent drowning in children. Swanton said nearly six of 10 African American and Latino children are unable to swim.

“The Y teaches children of all ages and backgrounds that water should be fun, not feared, and this practice not only saves lives, it builds confidence,” she said.
