FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Flint parents are outraged at an apparent lack of teachers and substitutes.

Parents and caretakers of children at Flint Southwestern said it’s gotten so bad many kids are forced to sit in the hall or auditorium doing nothing.

“These kids are out future. This is not supposed to happen,” said Roshaina Howard, aunt.

Howard is still in disbelief after a school social worker called her asking why her niece wasn’t in school.

Howard had just dropped her off at Flint Southwestern Classical Academy that morning.

“I called up to the school. They told me, ‘no, your child is not here,’” Howard said.

She went back to the school where a security guard, who recognized her niece’s photo, found her.

Howard’s niece wasn’t in a classroom, but inside the auditorium with several other students claiming they had no teachers or substitutes.

“These kids have been without teachers for the last three months. They’ve been in the auditorium or roaming the hallways. And the little teachers they do have, the room is overpopulated,” Howard said.

Howard immediately took to social media to spread the word to parents their children could be attending school with no supervision or education.

She said she realizes the Flint school district is severely understaffed, but said something needs to be done.

“The school is overpopulated. First of all, a lot of kids are being disrespectful and I understand that. I get that. But you are still responsible to keep these kids safe,” Howard said.

FCS Assistant Superintendent Shelly Umphrey released the following statement Friday:

“The substitute teacher shortage is an issue across the state of Michigan, and Flint Community Schools is no exception. However, it is important to note students are not left unsupervised in any instance. When substitute teachers are not available, counselors and school administrators provide support with curriculum, grading and attendance reporting, ensuring students stay on track. Our human resources department is actively recruiting candidates to fill permanent teaching positions while also exploring options within the Flint Community Schools District and with PESG, our substitute teacher staffing system, to fill substitute teacher positions. We encourage any interested applicants to call the District’s human resources office at 810-760-1218 to find out additional information about becoming a substitute teacher.”
