FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Flint resident Cindy Dwyer was in need of a chimney repair, so the TV5 Surprise Squad was called to help.

“Thank you, thank you,” Dwyer said. “I can’t thank you enough, I really can’t.”

Dwyer is filled with gratitude that her once decaying chimney is finally repaired.

She’s lived at her home for decades, but after beating stage four bladder cancer and now dealing with COPD, she couldn’t afford the necessary repairs.

“I couldn’t get it to quit leaking and coming down into the bedroom and what not, because I didn’t know what was wrong,” Dwyer said.

So she called the TV5 Rescue Squad and shortly after received a call from one man, Tom Sanford.

He runs a chimney and fireplace service in Atlas and after hearing about Dwyer’s condition, he promised to come help her at no charge once the weather cleared up.

“It’s just one of those things that I just kind of bang, there it is,” Sanford said. “So I called right away and she called me back and here we are.”

Sanford said the chimney was severely blocked, but thanks to a new layer of coating is now leak free.

For Dwyer, this act of kindness has not only warmed her home, but also her heart.

“It’s such a relief to have it done, to know that I can now take care of the rest of it and get things back to the way they’re supposed to be,” Dwyer said. “But I can’t thank you enough for coming and helping me.”
