LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Livingston County.

Troopers were called about 5 a.m. on Sunday, April 29 to a home in Handy Township for reports of a suicidal man.

Police said when they arrived the man had already injured himself with a knife and was hiding in the basement of the home. Officers were able to make contact with him and call for an ambulance.

However, investigators said when police tried to render aid the man allegedly became combative and moved towards officers with the knife.

A Fowlerville Police Department officer shot the man to stop the threat.

He was airlifted to University of Michigan Hospital where he underwent surgery, police said.

Shrapnel from a bullet also hit a trooper in the leg. He was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital in good condition.

As is protocol, the officer who shot the suicidal man has been placed on administrative leave until the prosecutor’s office can investigate.
