Police took a man into custody after a nearly six-hour long standoff in a pharmacy that brought an Oscoda County town to a standstill.

“It was a situation that could have been worse that what it was. With the help of everyone involved I think it worked out exactly the way we wanted it to,” Sheriff Kevin Grace said.

Our affiliates at 9 & 10 News report the situation started about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in Mio.

Police got calls about a man with a gun in the Pioneer Family Pharmacy on Morenci Avenue.

The sheriff’s department set up a perimeter around the pharmacy, shutting down the entire downtown in Mio.

State police were also called in, leading to a lengthy standoff.

Grace and state police negotiators pleaded with the man to come out of the building. He was the only one inside.

Finally, after nearly six hours it all came to a peaceful end.

“It’s what we’re trained to do and like I say with the assistance of everybody involved it worked out peacefully and just the way we wanted. And we used everybody, sheriff’s department, state police, MDOT, the Oscoda Road Commission, we had everybody out to give us a hand,” Grace said.

The suspect will be arraigned Wednesday.

During the standoff, schools and businesses in the area went into lockdown.

Gas stations near the pharmacy closed their doors, while the Mio school district went into lockdown in an effort to keep students safe.

The school lifted the extra security at 3 p.m. and sent students home.

Parents of kids there were happy with the response time of both the school and law enforcement.

“I heard it from the school they gave out an alert, I came into town to check on my wife who works here. Glad it went the way it did you know nobody was hurt law enforcement did an excellent job responded quick ended peacefully,” Nick Matthews said.
