John and Mary Dovgin have 32 years of marriage and a love for boating.

Since 1990 the Chicago couple spends every summer on Lake Michigan in South Haven.

Dovgin said their latest trip together on the water was almost their last.

“I saw a look in my husband's eyes I hope I never see again,” Mary Dovgin said.

Dovgin said she and her husband docked their boat and were getting ready to leave when a medical condition caused muscles in his legs to give out and he fell into the cold water.

“I threw a life ring in there to get him and I got him to hold on to try to keep his body up and then I grabbed the line on the life ring and I brought him all the way to the swim platform, but because of the condition he has the muscles in his body all gave out,” she said.

Dovgin said she put the boat's swim ladder down for her husband to grab. She wrapped her arms underneath him for support and they both held on for almost 10 minutes.

“I screamed for help a couple times, but nobody heard me. And something kicked in and I looked down at my watch and I remembered that I had cellular and I just yelled to Siri to call 911,” she said.

Her smart watch dialed in and she talked to a dispatcher.

Dovgin said within a few short minutes first reponders came to their rescue. She said she never thought a little watch could mean the difference between life and death.

“I recommend it to everybody because here's a perfect example. It saved somebody's life.  The new technology that you have the ability talk on your watch without your phone,” she said.

Her husband is now recovering in a hospital with five broken ribs.

When they're both healthy, Dovgin said they're getting back on the water and have technology to thank to continue their love for boating together.

“God gave me the strength to hold him and the instinct to look at my watch and call 911,” she said.
