WASHINGTON, DC (WNEM) -

Four Bay City Western Middle School students were injured during a bus crash on their class trip to Washington, D.C.

There were 109 eighth grade students on the trip to the nation's capital. They were traveling on three separate buses organized by the World Strides travel company, Bay City Public Schools Superintendent Stephen Bigelow said.

An airport shuttle reportedly pulled in front of the lead bus, cutting it off, which caused the collision. The second bus then hit the lead bus from behind, Bigelow said.

Four students were sent to the hospital with bumps and bruises, Bigelow said.

The bus line will be in contact with parents.

Bigelow said this is the ninth year the trip has been held.
