As warmer weather is rolling in, more bikers are hitting the roads.

And May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

According to Michigan State Police, there were 137 deaths due to motorcycle crashes last year and 2,238 recorded injuries.

“So, one thing we really try to push for our customers is for them to be aware,” said Georgia Gregorick, marketing director for Vehicle City Harley Davidson.

Gregorick said the store not only places an emphasis on rider awareness, but also safety gear. Especially when it comes to riding at night.

“Most of our gear is reflective and we also sell our neon safety. So, with that we really try to push bright colors so that other vehicles can see you,” Gregorick said.

The bikers we spoke to said it’s not just important to have safety gear on you, but also keep up maintenance on your ride as well.

“A lot of people wait ‘til the rain comes and there’s no salt. But I figure the salt wears off, I want to ride now,” said Carl Rhinebolt, biker.

He said during safety awareness month, there’s no better time to take your bike in for a check-up.

Meanwhile, others like Keith Woolworth said awareness month should go both ways out on the roads too.

“I think it’s more awareness on automobiles and motorcycle riders paying more attention,” Woolworth said.
