SANILAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man is dead after he hit a deer while riding a dirt bike.

It happened on May 2 at 8:35 p.m. on Ridge Road between Custer and Snover Roads in Sanilac County’s Sanilac Township.

Deputies report the 22-year-old Benjamin Maxfield from Sandusky was riding a 2017 Yamaha dirt bike when he collided with a deer that ran into the roadway, causing him to lose control and lay the bike on its side.

The bike slid some distance before coming to a stop and throwing Maxfield, investigators report.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

The incident remains under investigation, and witnesses are still being contacted.
