BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

The wait is finally over.

The barricades were removed and the first vehicles crossed the Independence Bridge in Bay City on Thursday after nearly four months of closures.

The bridge was closed due to extensive repairs and numerous delays.

It was tough on the city’s residents.

“I always use that bridge and the traffic has been an issue with it,” one resident said.

Business owner Christine Morrison takes the bridge for work and to get home.

“I used to live on the other side of town. And it is how you get to this side of town the easiest,” Morrison said.

With the bridge finally reopening, it’s not just good for Bay City area commuters, but also for local businesses as well.

“On our Facebook page, I posted that the bridge will be open at 2 p.m. So, everybody can shoot right over here and be early,” said Summer Militello, with Seung-Ni Fit Club in Bay City.

Militello said business has been slower and more difficult on members because of the bridge’s closing.

Despite the delays, she said it has been well worth the wait.

“I mean, it’s better to have it safe than have something happen,” Militello said.

The city hopes to open the Independence Bridge back up to pedestrians by May 21.
