MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) -

Hundreds of pets will be available for free adoption thanks to a returning Michigan event.

BISSELL Pet Foundation announced its next EMPTY THE SHELTERS event is back and bigger than ever! The event will be held on Saturday, May 5 and cover the adoption fees as 111 shelters and rescues across 13 states.

The Grand-Rapids based organization suggests doing your research ahead of the weekend event. Each shelter and rescue group participating has their own requirements before a pet is adopted into a new home.

Some examples of rules and regulations from each shelter include:

  • Pre-approval of adoption application
  • Housing or rent verification
  • Employment verification
  • Verification from the vet that all existing pets in the home are up-to-date on vaccinations
  • Crate or carrier to safely bring your new pet home

According to the ASPCA, nearly 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year.

The event combats this problem by increasing adoption rates.

Here’s a list of shelters and rescues in Mid-Michigan participating in the event:

  • Adopt-A-Pet, Inc. in Fenton
  • Bay County Animal Control in Bay City
  • Clare County Animal Shelter in Harrison
  • Genesee County Animal Control in Flint
  • Gladwin County Animal Shelter in Beaverton
  • Humane Animal Treatment Society in Mount Pleasant
  • Humane Society of Midland County in Midland
  • Los Gatos Foster Animals in Flint
  • Pet Angel Adoption & Rescue in Frankenmuth
  • Shiawassee Humane Society in Owosso
