A Bay City family is reaching out to the community for help after their home was destroyed by fire.

It happened about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 6 on Salzburg, between Euclid Avenue and Wenona Road.

The Bay City fire chief said the two-unit apartment is a total loss from extensive smoke and water damage, a flooded basement, and the roof caving in.

The fire chief said seven people were in the building when the fire broke out and two of them sustained injuries.

One of the victims is a man in his 30s. He was taken to Hurley Medical Center with critical burns. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help him pay for medical costs and support his two children.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire chief said there were reports of an explosion before the fire, but the department is trying to determine if there was an explosion and if it is connected to this incident.

A GoFundMe account states Matt and Kesley and their three young daughters were home when the fire started. The toddlers had to run out in boots, according to the page, and the family lost all of their belongings in the fire.

The family is asking for monetary donations, or clothing donations for their girls. Both older girls are in size 10 shoes, according to the page. The girls also need 4T, size 6-7 and 9-12 month clothes. The mother is a size 0/1 in pants and small shirts. Dad wears 36x34 pants and 2X shirts.

The girls are in size 6 and 4 diapers. The family is also in need of a rear-facing car seat.

Donations can be dropped off to Randi or Sam at AJ Baileys Bar on Salzburg Road, according to the page.
