A family is picking up the pieces after a fire destroyed everything they owned.

It happened over the weekend in Bay City.

“Shocked. Confused. We didn’t expect to lose our house, everything we own to a fire,” said Stacy Sweet, homeowner.

She said embers from a fire next door sparked flames at her home on Sunday.

The Bay City fire chief said the fire started on the first floor of a two-unit apartment building on Salzburg Street.

Two people were sent to the hospital and one of them is in critical condition. The fire also left a family homeless.

Sweet said her home suffered serious damage, but she knows she was fortunate.

“A lot of stuff I can save. My bedroom stuff I can’t. My clothing, bedding, kitchen stuff, but besides that we’re pretty good,” Sweet said.

Sweet’s niece lived in the burned-out apartment building next door. Sweet is hoping the community can help her niece and her family.

“I’m more worried about her and her kids. They have absolutely nothing. I’m praying for the guy downstairs. I don’t know what happened to him, how he’s doing,” Sweet said.

That man is in critical condition at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, according to the fire chief.

As for Sweet, she said she is devastated by the unfortunate turn of events that have affected everyone on the block.

“We just happen to be family here. It’s all come together and you know, I can’t even talk. It’s just a shame that everything happened the way it did,” Sweet said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
