Tree smashes through couple's newly built roof

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A toppled tree is causing more than just a headache for a homeowner.

It’s a financial burden that she said her family can’t afford.

The tree damaged her new roof and her family’s van and now she’s reaching out for help.

“Depressing. It’s like a start over for me. We just saved for three years to get a fresh roof,” said Tanisha Lee.

Lee and her family spent years saving enough money to put a new roof over their heads, only to have last weeks wind storm, damage a huge part of it in just a few minutes.

Those winds knocked an old dead tree onto their home.

“It put four holes in the top of the roof, so now I’m at the point where I’m praying for no rain,” Lee said.

Lee said the tree wasn’t even from her property.

“It’s actually from the neighbor's backyard,” Lee said. “We’re not sure about what’s going on next door. But in the meanwhile, it’s really rough waiting to see what’s going to happen next.”

Not only did the tree destroy the roof but it hit the families van and now it’s just being held up by a couple of pallets.

Lee and her husband were trying to restore their Flint home.

She said with so many badly needed repairs she wasn’t able to get insurance on it.

“No not yet because like I said it’s still a project,” Lee said. “We were trying to get it done so we could get some insurance. So that’s the bad part.”

Lee works full time and her husband is disabled, so she said it’s going to be tough, getting this tree down and repairing all of the damage, especially finically.

Lee hopes someone could lend a helping hand, so her children will have a safe place to sleep at night.

“I need some support,” Lee said. “If anyone can help me, do the best you can. It’s going to be a long process, but I’m just glad everybody’s alive.”
