GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Babysitting might be a lot more lucrative than it used to be.

A national survey shows the average hourly rate parents are forking over for a single child is eclipsing $16 an hour.

Those rates can vary throughout the country.

“My mom babysits because we have four. Otherwise, one of us would have to stay home full-time. We just couldn’t afford it,” said Tara Dew, mother.

With four children, including a newborn, Dew knows all too well how expensive babysitting can be – especially as a working mom.

“I work part-time and my husband works part-time,” Dew said.

According to the website Care.com, the average hourly rate for a babysitter in the country climbed to nearly $16.50 for one child.

That’s a spike from last year’s national average of $15.20. And it’s worse for larger families.

Recent research has shown babysitting costs as much as $19 an hour for a family with two children.

“Yeah right. My husband doesn’t even make $19 an hour. It wouldn’t be possible. There’s no way,” Dew said.

There is some good news for Dew and other Mid-Michigan families. The cost seems to be much lower locally than places like New York or San Fransisco.

Dew lives in Flint. So, she could expect to pay about $14.50 an hour for two children. While Saginaw families could pay even less.

Dew said it’s still hard to pay those kind of rates, but understands why it keeps going up.

“Children are very important. Whoever is looking after them needs to be qualified, definitely. But at the same time, I can’t afford it. So, I don’t think there’s a great answer. Unless you have a grandma like I do,” Dew said.

Dew said if grandma isn’t available, hiring a babysitter just isn’t an option for them.

“One of us just stays home always. We don’t go out ever, never,” Dew said.
