A home was destroyed by flames and a life was nearly lost in the chaos.

A victim from a fire on Sunday is gradually improving, having made it to safety because of a neighbor who was willing to take the heat.

“I was sitting at my kitchen table and I heard what sounded like an explosion,” said Kyle Lee, neighbor.

The 26-year-old lives a few doors down from the two-unit apartment building on Salzburg in Bay City that went up in flames.

When the fire broke out, Lee acted immediately. He ran towards the fire to help save Osca Tejada’s life.

“He was covered in blood and burns and I saw I had to get this guy away,” Lee said.

Lee said he sprang right into action as soon as he saw the man on the porch with flames coming out of the home.

“He was in shock clearly. And I told him, ‘man, you got to get up.’ And all he could respond with was, ‘I can’t move,’” Lee said.

Lee said thanks to the help of two other men passing by, he was able to drag Tejada to safety.

Tejada is recovering at Hurley Medical Center. His condition has been upgraded from critical condition to serious.

Many in the neighborhood are calling Lee a hero. He said he had no choice.

“I think obviously, it was right time, right place. Because had he had to have waited until emergency services got here, sadly it would’ve been a different outcome I feel like,” Lee said.
