BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

One person died and another was injured after a motorcycle collided with a car on Veterans Bridge Wednesday afternoon.

It happened about 2:30 p.m. when the westbound motorcycle crossed the concrete median and collided with the eastbound car, Bay City Department of Public Safety said.

The driver of the motorcycle, 47-year-old Mike Gast, sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Hurley Medical Center where he later died.

The passenger of the motorcycle, a 48-year-old Sebewaing woman, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Covenant. She is listed in serious, but stable condition.

The driver of the car, a 19-year-old Essexville woman, was not injured.

The bridge was closed for about three hours while investigators processed the scene. The bridge reopened about 5:30 p.m.

Bay City Public Schools Superintendent Stephen Bigelow said a bus of Handy Middle School students was on the bridge when the crash happened. Bigelow said counselors are "on-the-ready" at the middle school, but students are handling the situation well.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Bay City Department of Public Safety was assisted at the scene by the Bay County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan State Police.
