Authorities are investigating after a man drowned while fishing with his wife on the Saginaw Bay.

It happened about 8 a.m. Tuesday about two-and-a-half miles offshore near Eagle Bay Marina.

Arenac County Undersheriff Don McIntyre said 64-year-old Joseph Houf of West Branch was leaning over the side of his boat to free a tangled fish when a wave knocked him over.

Houf’s wife was unable to pull him back into the boat.

Another fisherman found his body about two hours later, McIntyre said.

An autopsy was performed, but the results are pending.
