It’s a chance for everyone to give back and you don’t even need to leave your house to do so.

Postal carriers are hoping you will deliver something to your mailbox on Saturday to help your community.

“This is just my third year doing this particular route, but I see it growing bigger and bigger every year,” said Amy Near, postal worker.

Each year the National Association of Letter Carriers does a food drive.

Postal workers like Near collect non-perishable food items along their route.

“It’s a really, really good cause. It goes right here to the Midland community right here in Midland County. So, everything that we collect goes right here into our own community,” Near said.

On the second Saturday of May, mail carriers do their jobs like any other day. But they add one more task to their list. They are a middle man for customers who want to donate to local food banks.

To participate, you just take your non-perishable goods to your mailbox and your mail carrier will do the rest.

Near said last year they collected more than 45,000 pounds of food. She is hoping to top that this year.

“I’ll use today if I see them I’ll remind them and try to get them motivated and remind them about tomorrow. So, that’s what I’m hoping for. Just a little more giving,” Near said.

Regardless of the turn out, Near said the extra work is well worth it if it helps them stamp out hunger.

“We’re at everyone’s house anyways. So, for us to just pick up the food you know, it’s simple and it feels really good to be a part of it. It feels really, really good,” Near said.
