It’s a device that can mean the difference between life and death.

Which is why a commander at a local Veterans of Foreign Wars post is hoping the community can help buy one of the life-saving tools.

“Some of the guys were over using the gym having a basketball game,” said Craig Latart, commander of VFW Post 7302 in Hemlock.

He said he’s seen firsthand how AEDs save lives after one of his friends went into cardiac arrest and was treated on site.

“I don’t think he’d be walking around talking right now if they wouldn’t of had it,” Latart said.

VFW Post 7302 held a seminar with Mobile Medical Response on Tuesday on how to use an automated external defibrillator.

“If you’ve determined that they don’t have a pulse, the first thing you want to do while someone has gone to get the AED for you, you want to start compressions. So, while this is going on someone will bring you the AED and at that point in time you can administer the AED onto the patient’s chest and it will walk you through the exact steps on how to put it on,” said Hunter Stewart, EMT with MMR.

Each AED carries a price tag of $1,300. The folks at VFW Post 7302 think it’s a necessary device to have.

They are asking for donations towards purchasing their own AED.

“Well, when we have events here we’ve got enough people in here that if we do have an incident it would be real nice to have it where we’re not just doing CPR. But we can actually try to get them up and going prior to an ambulance arriving,” Latart said.

If you would like to donate you can send a donation to the VFW Post 7302 at 17595 Gratiot Road in Hemlock. You can also call 989-385-0144.
