ARENAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A local animal control director is getting national recognition for her commitment to animals and making sure each one finds a forever home.

Now she needs your help to take home a major prize and help even more animals.

“I was shocked,” said Catherine Lemunyon, director of the Arenac County Animal Control.

An anonymous person nominated Lemunyon for Petco Foundation’s Unsung Heroes Award in March. She won the $10,000 prize and plans to use it towards helping more animals, like Wishbone.

“Probably 300 to 400 quills we pulled out of him. He was pretty touch and go that night. I really wasn’t sure if he was going to make it, but he did survive and pull through,” Lemunyon said.

Now Wishbone has a happy home. Lemunyon’s four-legged friend is the big reason why a television crew from Animal Planet was in town to document the nomination.

Lemunyon will get national recognition when she appears on the network’s show “It’s me or the Dog.”

“It’s an incredible honor to be chosen as one of five other people in the country,” Lemunyon said.

Now she is in the running for the grand prize of $25,000. It’s something she hopes she wins.

“It would be amazing and a little overwhelming I think, you know? But certainly, great recognition for what we’re doing here,” Lemunyon said.

That is why she would appreciate your vote. So more animals like Wishbone have the chance to live a good life.

As for Lemunyon, she has a message for the person who nominated her.

“Thank you. I’d love to know who you are so I could thank you in person, but I guess this will have to do,” she said.
