MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University baseball team placed a total of four players on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCWA) All-Midwest Region team Wednesday afternoon (May 16).
In addition, senior pitcher Tyler Jandron was named the Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season as well as First Team All-Region. Sophomore outfielder David Vinsky also earned First Team All-Region. Senior starting pitcher Ian Dimitrie and junior relief pitcher Lennon Gwizdala both earned Second Team All-Region.
Jandron leads the GLIAC in ERA at 1.99 – the second-best ERA in the league is 3.21. Jandron currently ranks in the top three in the conference in wins (nine), complete games (four) and strikeouts (88). Despite being at Northwood for just two years, Jandron is the all-time winningest pitcher in school history, having gone 21-3 with a 2.20 ERA in his time at NU. Jandron is the first player in GLIAC history to win Pitcher of the Year two consecutive years.
Vinsky turned in his second consecutive big season at the plate for the Timberwolves. He is currently batting .416 with seven home runs and 49 RBIs. Vinsky currently stands with 89 hits, 16 more than any other player in the GLIAC. Over the first two years of his career, Vinsky has 190 hits and 50 doubles as well as a .433 batting average. He was recently named the MVP of the GLIAC Tournament, where he hit .529 with a 1.000 slugging percentage over four games.
Gwizdala has gone 4-2 this season with a school-record and GLIAC-leading 13 saves as the Timberwolves closer this season. He has thrown 44 innings this year and has registered 53 strikeouts. His 20 career saves ranks second in NU history.
Dimitrie turned in his second-straight big year for Northwood on the mound, currently standing with a 10-2 record with a 3.94 ERA in 13 starts. He is just the second pitcher in school history to win 10 game in a season, joining Jandron from last season. Dimitrie currently leads the GLIAC in wins while standing fifth in strikeouts (79), second in innings pitches (82.1) and sixth in ERA. He has 20 career wins for Northwood, good for second in school history and ranking only behind Jandron on the all-time last.
Northwood (38-14) won both the GLIAC and the GLIAC Tournament Championship for the second straight season this year. The Timberwolves will open NCAA Tournament play with a game against Ashland Thursday night (May 17) at 9:30 p.m. (ET).
