Bay City sees jump in reported motor vehicle thefts, sex crimes

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

The Bay City Department of Public Safety is out with its 2017 annual report of criminal offenses.

While crime is down in many areas, like burglary rates which dropped 22 percent since 2016, other areas saw a significant increase.

Perhaps one of the biggest jumps was within reports of motor vehicle theft. It rose 72-percent with just 36 reports in 2016 compared to 62 last year.

Another significant increase was reports of criminal sexual conduct, with 88 offenses. Reports are up 69-percent from 2016.

Police also reported a 63-percent increase in controlled substance violations and a 31-percent rise in robbery reports.
