FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A memorial was held to help the family of a man who was killed at a local sports bar and grill.

Vince Robinson was shot on May 6th at Kickers Sports Bar and Grill in Grand Blanc Township.

His family and friends surprised him for his 35th birthday but the night ended tragically with gunfire.

Robinson fought hard for his life in the hospital but died six days later.

“Well we’re going to celebrate his life, he wouldn’t want us to be sad but I’m human and this is tough,” said Roy Simpson, Vince’s cousin.

To celebrate his life, friends and family gathered at Pengelly Park in Flint.

Their hope is a five on five basketball tournament, selling t-shirts, and food will help make a dent in unexpected funeral costs and to help care for his young son.

“Without Vince and without a few others, we wouldn’t have this family atmosphere that we do and as you can see everybody is pulling together from all different colors and backgrounds and we’re giving back to him because he meant so much to us,” said Michael Howard, the event organizer.

Howard played basketball with Vince for more than two decades, he said this is exactly how Vince would want to be remembered on the court.

Because of Vince’s talent and passion for basketball, the Pengelly Park was the perfect place to hold this event.

Howard said Vince was active in the community, participating in numerous basketball leagues and caring for the Pengelly Park that helped kids get involved in sports.

Their hope is that events like these raise awareness for gun violence and to ultimately remember the man that was loved by so many.

“There’s no 'without him’, he’s right up there he’s looking,” Simpson said.
