Work is underway on the new home for Saginaw County prisoners.

Ground broke on the more than $35 million project on Monday.

“A safer facility for the public and a safer facility for the men and women who operate that facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel said.

Federspiel is thrilled for the new facility that will house both the county jail and the sheriff administration building.

He and other county leaders spent the morning celebrating the new detention center while also reflecting on the past.

“In 1836 the board resolved to raise $1.5 million to build a county jail in the city of Saginaw,” said Cheryl Hadsall, county commissioner.

Now, with a price tag of almost $36 million, the building will cover about 87,000 square feet and house 511 beds.

The new facility is being built at the corner of Adams and Harrison Street. It is directly across the street from the current county jail, but Federspiel said the move is necessary for safety.

“Reduction of liability, safer for our community, safer for my staff and no new taxes,” Federspiel said.

Federspiel said it’s a ground breaking four years in the making. In that time, he said the community feedback helped to perfect the overall project after residents nearby were concerned the construction could potentially damage their homes.

“There were concerns like if you’re going to be driving big pylons into the ground, what kind of vibration is that going to cause and how will that affect my home? I understand the concerns of the neighborhood. We’ve met with the neighborhood group many times. There’s been some heated discussions, but ultimately I think people understand,” Federspiel said.

The building should be finished in 18 months.
