A local woman was caught in a case of roadkill and needed rescue from the remains.

A deer carcass was dragged close to her house and the stench became unbearable.

“Nobody really thought who’d you’d call, and it’s not who you’d guess,” said Debie Baxter, Zilwaukee resident.

The deer was hit and killed on Westervelt Road in Zilwaukee this past weekend. Before long, it was bloated and started to stink.

“It’s really not a good sight and it’s really kind of unsanitary after all of these days,” Baxter said.

It turns out, you call your local sheriff’s office to remove things like this. But Baxter was told by a deputy it probably wouldn’t happen this week.

She was told it might not happen until Memorial Day.

TV5 made a call to Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel and he sent a crew out to pick up the carcass within an hour.

The sheriff said his department has been handling road kill for about eight years.

“I just ask people to call. Mondays are the days that we do it. And so we’re going to be as faithful as we can to that, but have patience if by chance somebody isn’t here or is on vacation and we’re shorthanded. We’ll get there and we’ll get there as quick as we can,” Federspiel said.

Meanwhile, Baxter is grateful the carcass is gone.

“I’m kinda glad that TV5 got involved. Made a quick phone call and we’re getting a little bit quicker service,” Baxter said.
