Police: Delivery driver kills alleged meat thief

Posted: Updated:

A Michigan man is dead after the driver of a meat delivery truck shot him.

The driver said the man and an accomplice were stealing meat off his truck and he fired because he believed the thief was armed.

Jerel Carter recalls the chaotic scene Wednesday morning as a truck driver with a concealed pistol license opened fire. He later turned his gun in to detectives, who questioned him but didn't arrest him.

"It's a good area especially with market days coming up. Why don't you just get a job like everybody else? That's how I look at it,” Carter said.

The shooting happened at Riopelle and the Fisher Freeway Service Drive in Detroit. Just after 10 a.m. people living nearby heard a single gunshot and saw a man lying dead in the street outside Capital Poultry.

"It's uncalled for. Doesn't make sense. That word covers it all. Don't make sense,” Melvin Neely said.

Police said a second suspect ran away and there were no other injuries.

"He came and he said somebody reached for a weapon. We don't know if it was the individual who was fatally shot or if it was the individual who fled, but the owner fired one shot,” Asst. Chief Arnold Williams said.

Police have not released a description of the man they are looking for. They've also not released the identity of the suspect killed after being shot in the head.

One neighbor said the sudden violence does not change his attitude about the Eastern Market.

The man who was killed was reportedly carrying a box cutter.

Police are investigating and county prosecutors will decide if charges will be filed.
