MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The new children’s movie “Show Dogs” just opened in theaters.

It is receiving some harsh criticism, causing the studio behind the film to make some edits.

The film centers around a police canine attempting to go undercover in the world of show dogs. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation said some of the scenes in the movie is sending a troubling message to children.

“That’s a little disturbing,” said Joshua Budry, Mid-Michigan resident.

Budry is referring to a scene from the movie. The controversial scene involves a show dog being touched on his genitals and gets through it by going to his “Zen place.”

“Man, I couldn’t imagine that if you were to get touched in a place to go to your Zen place,” Budry said.

“That is such grooming behavior and it’s everything we fight against,” said Suzanne Greenberg, president and CEO of the CAN Council.

The CAN Council works to prevent child abuse and neglect. She said the movie is sending the wrong message.

Greenberg said kids should never feel it is OK to be touched inappropriately.

“They’re seeing that, ‘well I guess if someone is doing something I don’t like I just have to go to my happy place.’ And that is a message we do not want children to have,” Greenberg said.

Another Mid-Michigan resident had a different viewpoint when it comes to pulling that scene from the movie.

“It is a movie. They can do what they want,” said Melvin Killinger, parent.

He is taking his kids to see the movie this weekend. He said a movie will never influence his children more than he does.

“If they have any questions or any concerns in regards to life, they can come to us and they’ll talk to us about it,” Killinger said.

The movie’s producers seem to be listening to their critics. They have decided to edit the scene out of the movie.

Budry said that was the right move.

“I hope that they don’t throw it back in the DVD director’s cut. I hope that it’s not something that makes it to the final product and as little amount of kids seen it and were affected as possible,” Budry said.
