Parent thwarts proposed Michigan middle school attack

Posted: Updated:

Four Michigan middle school students are under investigation for allegedly discussing plans to attack their school with weapons.

Authorities said a concerned parent called police Wednesday night after hearing about the threat.

Officials believe the four students at Lakeshore Middle School discussed attacking students and staff Thursday morning with firearms, but police said the students did not have the means to carry the threat out.

Police commended the parent for reaching out to law enforcement.

"Do the right thing, not the wrong thing, and let somebody know your thoughts and the reason you're thinking that way and seek help and seek intervention,” said Chief Jeff Hawke with Grand Haven Public Safety.

The students are said to be ages 13 and 14 from Norton Shores, Ferrysburg, and Grand Haven.

"We'll continue to collaborate with law enforcement on concluding the investigation. We'll certainly follow what the prosecutor's office determines and does in terms of their actions, and we'll be working internally for our own school discipline actions,” said Superintendent Andrew Ingall with Grand Haven Area Public Schools.

Prosecutors are considering whether the students will face criminal charges.
