COLUMBIAVILLE, MI (WNEM) -

After a lengthy winter, just about everyone in Mid-Michigan is welcoming the unofficial start to summer with open arms.

Hundreds of people are kicking off the memorial weekend at Wolverine Campground in Genesee County, one of the hottest spots over the summer.

People were already out enjoying the beaches, fishing docks, and miles of walking trails for hiking and biking.

However, if you haven’t booked a spot yet, you may already be too late.

“It’s packed, we actually are all sold out for the weekend,” said Gary Pringle, the operations manager.

Pringle said many folks arrived at the campground early to avoid the rush, something he encourages visitors to do as the busy season ramps up.

To top it all off, it’s also the 50th anniversary of the Genesee County Parks program, and lots of folks have come out to enjoy themselves.

“It’s 50 years and going on strong and we have our normal kickoff for the summer," Pringle said. "And we have a fireworks display at Bluebell Beach Saturday evening."

Pringle said this weekend is hopefully a sign of things to come and warns people not to wait too long before booking a spot.

“They can make reservations for the next holiday or the month of June or anything like that and here at Buttercup Beach we take them as long as we have spots to park the cars,” Pringle said.
