A 25-year-old mother from Elkhart, Indiana is dead while her 2-month-old remains in the hospital after a late night collision on M-51 near 89th Avenue in Decatur late Friday evening.

Police say a 42-year-old Battle Creek woman driving a Jeep failed to correct for the curve while going northbound on M-51 and overshot, driving into the southbound lane and causing a head-on collision with the Chrysler driven by the 25-year-old Elkhart, Indiana woman.

The 2-month-old along with the 42-year-old were sent to a local hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

A sergeant with the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department said their preliminary investigation did indicate that the driver of the Jeep may have been under the influence of alcohol, but their investigation is currently being concluded.
