We’ll have the stars and stripes forever thanks to those who gave their lives for our country.

One of those remembered was Marine Corporal Ryan Burgess.

He was killed in action in 2014 during his second tour of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His mother, Kim Burgess, was the keynote speaker at this memorial.

“I am 100 percent sure my son died a happy man, he enjoyed what he was doing, he loved his family and friends,” Burgess said.

Even though it was difficult for Burgess to talk about losing her son, she thought it was something that she had to do.

What is the one thing she’ll remember most about him on a day like today?

“Just what a great person he was, his smile, his personality, the way he loved his family, he was just an outgoing wonderful active kid that enriched our lives and we miss that,” Burgess said.

Attendees at the memorial were touched by her talk.

Burgess also hopes families will pass along respect for the fallen to their youngsters.

“We teach our children to continue those traditions and teach our children the respect our military and our fallen and about the sacrifices they made for our freedoms,” Burgess said.
