BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The true meaning of Memorial Day often gets lost amid the barbecues and family get-togethers, but many tributes made sure our fallen veterans were not forgotten.

They are the sounds of remembrance, a gun salute, the skirl of bagpipes, and a lonely trumpeter.

One of the men who showed up and shot his gun said the reason he does it is very simple.

“Because I want to, because I want to honor my veterans and that’s just the way I feel,” said Gary Wright, an Army veteran. “I’ve been doing this for 10 years now and I enjoy every single minute of it.”

A man of the cloth also dealt with the afternoon heat to help remember fallen heroes.

“So many died for the very freedom that we have today to be able to come together, whether it’s in a public setting like this or in our churches or just generally in our community so that’s why I give thanks for this day and the great sacrifice for those who came before us,” said Rev. Charles Campbell from the American Legion Chaplain.

Also in Bay County, folks turned out along the banks of the Saginaw River to remember the fallen next to the USS Edson.

The mayor of Bay City said having this memorial in the shadow of this destroyer brings special memories to her.

“It’s absolutely breathtaking, every time when I see the ship when I come down into the drive here it just takes my breath away," said Mayor Kathleen Newsham. "My dad was in the Navy, it’s especially meaningful for me."

Newsham actually attended several memorial services and she encourages others to try to take in at least one when Memorial Day happens again.

“Just to give my honor and thank everyone who did what they did before us to get us here today,” Newsham said.
