How Mid-Michigan is beating the Memorial Day heat

Posted: Updated:

Whether you were outside to honor the fallen or taking in a little sunshine, it is more than just a little warm.

“I got home and I just started feeling wheezy and just light headed and the whole night I just was so sick and every time I was trying to drink water it was like I couldn’t even drink water,” said Lacey Barcalow.

Barcalow knows firsthand heat exhaustion is no joke.

Her experience with it was on her mind today as the mercury rose to around 90 degrees in most of Mid-Michigan.

Barcalow is a certified nutritionist and personal trainer at the Saginaw Athletic Club.

She has some advice to stay cool in the heat.

“Definitely sunscreen,” Barcalow said. “I don’t recommend store brand sunscreen. I recommend stuff that has actual coconut oil and stuff. Lots of cold water. Definitely lots of cold water. Stay more in the shade to get away from the sun. You don’t want to sit directly in the sun all the time.”

Barcalow was out at Haithco Park in Saginaw Township enjoying the hot weather with her son Luke.

She wants everyone here to play it safe in these warm temperatures.

“I hoping that people will really educate themselves and take the necessary steps so that they’re not dehydrating themselves,” Barcalow said. “Heat exhaustion is no fun.”
