MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A temporary repair has been made to the Chippewa River Road bridge near M-30 in Midland County after a hole appeared in the roadway.

The hole was found at 7:30 a.m. on May 29, and went all the way through the bridge, allowing people to see the Chippewa River underneath.

The Midland County Road Commission said a permanent repair will be made next week, and they’re still not sure what caused the hole to appear.

"It's pretty common on bridges and this one is pretty old," said Terry Palmer, spokesperson for the road commission.

Palmer said his staff worked for four and a half hours to make the temporary repair and open the street to both lanes of traffic.

"Putting a steel plate over the hole until we can get a schedule set to come in and repair the joint," Palmer said.

Until then, the speed limit has been reduced to 25 miles per hour in an effort to keep the new coal patch from kicking up onto other vehicles.

Palmer said he is glad his team spotted the break before it got any bigger.

"Well, it feels great. We've got a great crew of guys and they're all running the roads. So you notice it right away. And had a truck sitting there so we could get out there and do a repair," Palmer said.
