SHEPHERD, MI (WNEM) -

A new school is cutting students loose from the classroom to take on the lessons of life in the workforce.

The curriculum allows students a hands-on approach to exploring different careers, as well as building vital networking skills.

“We found out they had this great building that wasn’t being used,” said Jim Perry, founder of FlexTech.

Students will be able to enroll in a brand-new program this fall that’s geared toward kids who think outside the box.

Morey FlexTech High School is offering the unique education in Isabella County.

Perry said the program will offer real-world experience to teenagers.

“It’s the partnerships with the community. It’s bringing in professionals to work with kids, for kids to get out into the community and learn and work in businesses and really see you know, what are those essential skills to be successful,” Perry said.

Perry said by collecting information from other successful schools and even colleges, the curriculum will embrace project-based learning.

“We talked to a lot of employers and we talked to a lot of professors at college to find out what are the skills that kids need? So that’s what we’re really focused on is building those skills in high school that are going to help kids be successful in the workplace and in college,” Perry said.

The brand-new school will be housed at the Morey Education Center in Shepherd. The facility hasn’t been utilized since the closing of its more traditional high school back in 2009.

The Shepherd campus is the third FlexTech school to open in the state.

The school is currently enrolling ninth and 10th grade students with a big plan to expand in the future with the help of the Morey Foundation in Mt. Pleasant.

Philip Janis is the school’s principal. He said the program can really change things for a lot of kids.

“Students can be very mobile and collaborative in this space. The furniture is made to be able to move and take around, get into different kinds of learning styles and learning pods, different size groups, different opportunities to learn,” Janis said.

The high school is hosting an open house on Tuesday, June 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It is located at 380 W. Blanchard Road in Shepherd.
