Man crashes into 2 homes in Flint Township; no injuries

Authorities say several people are lucky to be uninjured after a car crashed into two homes.

It happened just before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30 on the 3300 block of Southgate Drive in Flint Township.

Flint Township Fire Asst. Chief Michael Burkley said a Dodge Charger driven by a 43-year-old Flint man left the road, hitting a garage at one home before driving into a house next door.

The driver fled the scene on foot, according to police. Officers later found him nearby.

Burkley said the man was driving impaired.

Two people were inside the home where the garage was hit. Two other people and two pets were in the second home the car crashed into. Burkley said the car went deep into the home, causing major damage to three rooms and the stairwell.

"I woke up to the sound of what sounded like an explosion going off," said Jacob Winters, resident.

Winters lives in the second house the car crashed into.

Fortunately, he and his mom were upstairs at the time. However, Burkley said the car did hit a bed a woman would have been sleeping in, but she was still up north from the Memorial Day weekend.

"I really thank God that I wasn't there last night or I would be dead. Because part of my bed is in the basement," said Wilda Cobb, Winters' grandmother.

The family said they are grateful to be back together, but admit they may not be able to call their house home for much longer.

"They're saying that the house is probably done. They're saying that the whole house was like shifted, the fire department said. And it's probably the structural integrity is done," Winters said.

As for Cobb, she said she bears no ill will to the driver. She just hopes other drivers won't follow his example.

"I don't know how this man survived, but I'm praying for him because he must be very miserable to drink and not stop like that. He didn't stop at all," Cobb said.

The driver was booked in the Genesee County Jail pending blood alcohol results and formal charges.
