A Michigan man was arraigned on a charge of felony assault after police say he attacked his uncle with a three-foot machete.

Duane Dishman, 22, was already in hot water. Facing a DUI charge, Dishman was on probation when police said he attacked his uncle.

"When the officers arrived, they found a victim hit in the upper left arm with a machete. He was bleeding very badly,” said Officer Michael Prince with Hartford Police Department. "Luckily he only struck the victim one time and it was over with."

Once was enough to create a bloody scene on West South Street in Hartford.

Arnold Baber was one of the neighbors who ran to the victim's rescue.

"He was yelling and yelling in agony and pain. I was like wow, let's call 911. So, we called 911 and the neighbors helped him and wrapped a towel around him,” Baber said.

An unusual scene anywhere, but Baber said the family is typically quiet with no problems.

"The guys are pretty cool, pretty quiet. You would never think they would be violent or anything would go on like that,” Baber said.

Police said the victim's injuries are severe.

Despite that, Baber is hoping the family heals.

"Family is thicker than anything. Whatever it is, you can just talk it out, work it out reasonably with each other because at the end of the day, all you got is family,” Baber said.

Dishman claims he was just protecting his home.

"He was trespassing on private property and I was just defending my home and myself. I didn’t want to harm him in any way,” Dishman said during his court appearance.
