They say a dog is man’s best friend, and a Michigan man is proving he’ll do a lot for his pet.

The Michigan DNR said they received a nuisance complaint about a bear in the Boyne Falls area.

A man said he let his beagle out on a cable about 4:30 a.m. When he returned a few minutes later to bring him in, he saw a bear running up his driveway.

The beagle barked at the bear, which then circled around and swatted at the dog.

The owner said he frantically tried to pull the dog inside, but the lead got tangled, so he kicked the bear.

When the bear came back and bit the dog, the owner punched the animal in the nose and it retreated enough for him to shut the door.
The DNR advised the man to remove all bird feeders, clean up all the sunflower seed husks and spread some moth balls in his yard. They also told him to stop feeding corn to the deer and turkeys in the backyard.

The beagle received several stitches in its side and rear end, the DNR said.
