FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -

More than a year after his 16-year-old son died from a fatal gunshot, a Freeland father has been sentenced in connection with the teen’s death.

Michael Dennis was a 10th grader when he shot himself at around 2 a.m. on May 14, 2017, at his home on N. River Road in Tittabawassee Township.

There had been a bonfire and alcohol at the home that night.

His father, David Dennis, plead guilty to a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a child.

On Monday Dennis received a 9-month delayed sentence, which means that if he successfully completes his probation, the case will be dismissed.

His probation calls for him to attend grief counseling and submit to drug and alcohol testing, according to the Saginaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Dennis also agreed to surrender his federal firearms license.
