ISABELLA COUNTY, MI (CBS) -

A Mid-Michigan couple is accused of stealing from a construction site.

Michigan State Police said James and Kimberly Besteman of Clare County were working on a hotel construction site in Mt. Pleasant and stole several items from the site.

Police said the thefts happened over a course of several months. Investigators found the stolen items, as well as methamphetamine, at two homes in Harrison.

The couple was arrested at their home on Tuesday.

Between the two homes, officials filled three trailers worth of stolen items.

“I woke up at 5:00 a.m. and there was like three cop cars out there and they were shining lights everywhere,” said Jacqueline Eggert, who lives nearby.

It’s what many neighbors of the homes on both Navajo Trail and Fir Trail woke up to Tuesday morning.

“They were bringing out all of these bundles of wrapped stuff like nothing had been used, and then the U-Hauls pulled in and they backed up and started loading all this stuff,” Eggert said.

Police said they found everything from nails, to dry wall, and even mattresses at the homes.

Neighbors said they were never suspicious of the couple.

“I’ve talked to them a couple times and they told me they were getting the extra stuff from work, so I thought that was believable. They also told me they had three bathtubs coming that they were giving to their friends, which seemed legit but clearly it was not,” said Danielle Hardy, who lives nearby.

Police said all the items were returned to the construction site.

The couple is also facing drug charges out of Clare County. James Besteman is also facing a habitual offender fourth offense charge.

Officials said the couple will still face theft charges in Isabella County and are expected to be arraigned on those within the next two days.
