Local Sears slated to close, liquidation sales start soon

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Another Mid-Michigan Sears store is closing its doors.

The Sears at the Genesee Valley Center Mall in Flint Township is among three Michigan Sears stores that are being shuttered.

The list, released by the company, said the local department store location will close in early September, and the auto center will close in late June.

Liquidation sales will begin as early as June 14.

Eligible employees will receive severance and be given the opportunity to apply at other Sears or Kmart stores.

Sears announced earlier Thursday that it will close at least 72 more Sears and Kmart stores “in the near future”.

The company closed a total of nearly 400 stores during the past 12 months, and now has a total of 894 left, including the 72 slated for closure. The two chains had a total of 3,500 U.S. stores between them when they merged in 2005.

Miles McFee, senior general manager for the Genesee Valley Center Mall, released the following statement:

It is disappointing to hear that Sears will be leaving Genesee Valley Center, they have been a tenant of ours since the mall first opened in 1971.  However, because there is a unique arrangement with Sears, where they actually own the building and the surrounding parking lot, it is premature to make any announcements about the store.  We will be working with them closely as the plans are finalized by Sears Holding as to the future of the building.  We cannot comment as to what is next until the matter is resolved with them.
