SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A former NFL superstar is drawing up a huge play for his hometown.

Super Bowl Champion Lamarr Woodley is tackling education by starting his own charter school in Saginaw.

“I’m looking forward to this. It’s gonna be exciting,” Woodley said.

The Saginaw native is taking his skills off the gridiron and into the classroom. The school is called Woodley Leadership Academy.

“It’s something I’ve been working on for about two years now and something to give back to the city,” Woodley said.

The academy will replace the old St. Stephen School in Saginaw. It will offer open enrollment with state approved curriculum and common core classes.

Classes are expected to open this fall.

“We’re going to open as K-5. We’re authorized as a K-8. So every year we’re going to add a grade until we get to eight,” Woodley said.

Accel Schools National Director Bruce Henson said they will be managing the academy in partnership with Woodley.

They are still offering positions for teachers within the school as well.

As for Woodley, he is looking forward to a huge turnout come September. He hopes it inspires others from Saginaw to do the same.

“I want to be an example for our kids. So that when you come through these are some of the things that you can do. There’s no reason that you can’t do this. You just gotta have it in your heart and have it in your mind to give back. Because what this is gonna do is help thousands of people,” Woodley said.
