Flint CFO expresses concern over city council's budget

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Flint leaders are being warned to not spend money on things the city can’t afford.

Mayor Karen Weaver’s Chief Financial Officer Hughey Newsome made his “extreme concern” public after city council members approved an amended budget on Wednesday.

Those amendments include a pay increase of $20,000 to the city clerk, a new deputy clerk position, a new parliamentarian position and full health benefits for part-time employees.

Newsome said this is the first budget for the city since its release from state oversight.

He said, “The risk these added costs could pose on the City’s budget is not in the best interest of the City nor the citizens of Flint.”

Weaver calls the additions disappointing and said she isn’t the city can afford them.
