Benefit will raise funds for man in need of heart transplant

TUSCOLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A local man is in desperate need of treatment after he was infected with a virus that’s attacking his heart.

Now the community around him vows to help.

The past 10 years have been tough for Duane Maguire and his family.

“Duane was diagnosed 10 years ago with a virus that got into his blood-stream and attacked his heart,” said Erin Maguire, Duane’s wife.

Defibrillators, pace-makers, and even open-heart surgery followed, but Duane’s heart simply cannot function properly.

He now has a Left Ventricular Assist Device or an LVAD to keep alive until he receives a heart transplant.

“He has to be plugged into power at all times, he has two batteries running him right now, at night he has to plug into a wall,” Erin said.

The Fairgrove Presbyterian Church is hosting a benefit dinner and silent auction on Thursday, June 7.

The benefit is being held to help Duane and his family with the mounting medical bills as he awaits a heart transplant.

Karen Goodchild, a member of the church, said it’s truly a community effort to help out someone who’s dedicated so much of himself to Fairgrove.

“He’s been a member of the Fairgrove community all his life and at one time he was even the president of the village,” Goodchild said.

“In the beginning, it was very overwhelming and the kids were very overwhelmed with it too, but I think just like I said with everybody that we’ve had, the community and everything, it’s just it’s been wonderful,” Erin said.
