SANILAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Investigators believe a driver fell asleep, causing his van to go into a ditch, go airborne, and end up on its side.

It happened on June 3 at around 5:37 a.m. on Deckerville Road in Sanilac County’s Marion Township.

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Department reports that a 59-year-old man from Minden was westbound when he fell asleep.

The van he was driving crossed the road, went into a ditch, hit a culvert and went airborne. The vehicle then hit a tree, overturned, and went back onto the road where it finally came to rest on its side.

The driver and three people inside were able to get out of the vehicle on their own.

Besides the driver, a 60-year-old man and 23-year-old man, both from Deckerville, and a 65-year-old Harbor Beach man were in the van.

The 60 and 65-year-olds were taken to the hospital, although their condition is unclear.

Everyone was wearing a seatbelt, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to detectives.
