Temperature Turn-around

Posted: Updated:

Our weather has pulled quite an about-face over the past several days. Coming off of a stretch of highs in the 80s and 90s, along with high humidity, we've settled into a cooler pattern that has carried us through the first weekend of June. The last few days however, are not the only dramatic turn-around we've seen in the weather as of late. April and May wound up being drastically difference months.

Saginaw, MBS Int'l Airport

Packing occasional snow, unseasonable cold, and even an ice storm, the first full month of Spring wasn't all that kind to us. April's unrelenting cold likely seemed extreme to many of us, and that's because it certainly was. April 2018 was the 2nd coldest on record in Saginaw, managing an average temperature of only 39 degrees.

May completely flipped the narrative in reverse. May roared out of the gates with a handful of unseasonably warm days, and turned that into a theme for the overwhelming majority of the month. In fact, 14 of the 31 days achieved an average temperature that was 10 degrees or more above normal! The average temperature for the month beat April's by nearly 25 degrees, finishing out at 63.9°. That's good enough to make May 2018 the 3rd warmest in the city's history!

Second-coldest to 3rd-warmest; sounds like a flip that's about as Michigan as can be!

Flint, Bishop Int'l Airport

Flint had a similar showing between April and May. April 2018 was the coldest in history for the Vehicle City, just a tenth of a degree warmer than Saginaw at 39.1 degrees.

Now, Flint has seen a few more warmer May's than the Tri-Cities, so the ranking did not come in quite as high. It was close though, with the city registering an average temperature of 63.6°. It wound up being the 6th warmest May on record, with 11 days clocking in with temperatures 10 degrees or more above normal. An additional 10 days saw temperatures at least 5 degrees warmer normal!

Coldest to a top-10 warmest. Still an impressive contrast to the bitter start to Spring we saw in April!
