Church hoping stolen items get returned after weekend burglary

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A thief broke into a local church and stole thousands of dollars in equipment.

Church leaders and parishioners pray the thieves are caught and their items get returned.

“This is the first time that we’ve experienced anything like this,” said Pastor Steve Rodriguez, with Church of God Seventh Day.

He has spent the last 15 years as the pastor for the church on Fayette and Stephens in Saginaw.

Rodriguez said last weekend someone broke into the church and stole some very valuable equipment. He said at least $5,000 worth of equipment was stolen and that cost doesn’t include the damage to the building itself.

He said the suspects came in through the basement, leaving quite a mess along the way.

“All of the PA system equipment was gone, speakers, wireless mics, power monitors, CD players, even the cables, the bass guitar,” Rodriguez said.

He said they’ve called around to local shops and music stores to let them know what happened, but he doesn’t expect to get any of the items returned.

“It’s heartbreaking, it really is. There’s a sense of a security and even sanctity of a church that you just don’t expect that to happen in,” Rodriguez said.

The church does have insurance. Rodriguez said he and the members are remaining hopeful and they are making plans to enhance security.

“It’s already been thrown out there by a couple of members and the church board. Perhaps it’s time to look into a security alarm or some kind of system,” Rodriguez said.
