FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

This weekend is your chance to see hundreds of incredible works of art at the Flint Art Fair.

Anita Spencer is one of the artists whose work will be featured at the 51st fair.

She plays with fire for a living. She has been doing what’s called flame working for more than 20 years. It’s the art form that creates beautiful glass beads used for jewelry.

“We take rods of glass that are about pencil diameter, maybe about 13 inches long, they come from Italy. And I use that to melt it around stainless-steel wire called a mandule. And that creates the hole and the bead,” Spencer said.

She has gotten so good at it she is even teaching students how to flame work at the Flint Institute of Arts. She said classes like hers are the perfect place to try something new and outside of your comfort zone.

“To see new students come into this art form and become mesmerized at the process of melting glass and making a bead out of it that they can keep. That’s been a great joy,” Spencer said.

Her jewelry will be featured at the art fair to help inspire others outside of the classroom.

Besides bead-making, there will be 21 different artists from the Flint Institute of Arts showing off their talents.

More than 150 artists will be featured during the weekend event. There’s anything from ceramics to paintings and even wood art.

Spencer said the best part is helping upcoming local artists.

“I think seeing a product that is hand crafted, it’s something that the artist has put their time and their soul and energy into to create something that’s beautiful and long-lasting. And certainly, a treasure for anyone to keep,” Spencer said.

The fair runs this Saturday and Sunday.
