FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Two Flint parents have been charged with multiple felonies related to an accidental shooting involving their 4-year-old daughter.

Their daughter lost a finger in the incident.

Eric Brown, 32, and Alicia Brown, 31, were at home with their four kids when one of their 4-year-old twin daughters went into a closet to get a toy and grabbed a loaded gun, the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office said.

That happened on June 4.

The gun was being kept in the closet and it fired off a round, striking the girl in the finger, according to the investigation.

The girl was taken to Hurley Medical Center for treatment and her left index finger was amputated.

The parents have each been charged with second-degree child abuse, obstruction of justice and lying to a peace officer in a violent crime investigation.

In addition, Eric Brown has been charged with felony firearm.

According to the investigation, the parents kept multiple handguns and rifles in the closet with some of them loaded.

There was not a gun safe in the house, according to police reports.

“This is a terrible, tragic and preventable incident,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said. “When there are children present in a home where guns are kept, I cannot stress enough that parents must be extra careful and vigilant to ensure the safety of their children and others.”

Leyton said it appears the parents acted with “almost no concern for their children’s safety.”

“As a result, they will be held accountable for their actions under the law,” Leyton said.
